Automatically convert JPG and JPEG images to WebP during WordPress Media Library uploads, with optional original file preservation.

== Description ==

# Automatic JPG/JPEG to WebP Conversion for WordPress

Automatically convert JPG and JPEG images to WebP when you upload them to the WordPress Media Library.

**JGWS Media Optimizer** is a lightweight WordPress plugin for automatic JPG/JPEG to WebP conversion. Images are processed locally using WordPress native image processing mechanisms, without requiring an external image optimization service.

**Lightweight local image converter for WordPress**

Convert JPG and JPEG images to WebP directly on your WordPress site — without external image optimization APIs, external image processing services, credits or processing limits.

**You stay in control of your original files in the WordPress Media Library.**

Upload a JPG or JPEG and let JGWS Media Optimizer handle the WebP conversion automatically.

## Simple and automatic

No additional steps are required after uploading an image. The plugin processes newly uploaded JPG and JPEG images as part of the normal WordPress Media Library workflow.

WebP can provide smaller image files while maintaining good image quality, which can help reduce storage usage and improve page loading performance.

## Keep your original JPG/JPEG files

You can optionally preserve the original JPG/JPEG file as a separate Media Library attachment.

This gives you access to both the original JPG/JPEG file and the generated WebP version.

By default, the original JPG/JPEG file is removed after a successful conversion.

## Local image conversion

Image conversion is performed locally using WordPress native image processing mechanisms.

No external image optimization service is required for JPG/JPEG to WebP conversion.

The plugin does use Freemius for account, licensing, premium version, upgrade, and related plugin functionality. See the External Services section below for details.

## WebP labels in the Media Library

The FREE version displays format labels for JPG, WebP and PNG files in the WordPress Media Library.

This makes it easy to identify the format of image files and which files have been converted to WebP.

## WordPress image sizes

JGWS Media Optimizer also generates WebP versions for image sizes created by WordPress.

This means that the WebP conversion works with the registered image sizes generated during the normal WordPress image processing workflow.

## Compatibility with imported images

JGWS Media Optimizer can also process images added to the WordPress Media Library through compatible external image import and content-creation mechanisms.

The plugin has been tested with images imported from Pexels through Kadence templates.

When a supported image is added to the Media Library, JGWS Media Optimizer can process it as part of its normal WebP conversion workflow.

== How It Works ==

When a JPG or JPEG image is added to the WordPress Media Library — whether through a standard upload or through a compatible image import mechanism — JGWS Media Optimizer uses the WordPress image editor system to process the image and its registered sizes.

The uploaded JPG/JPEG image and its generated image sizes are converted to WebP.

The FREE version uses a fixed WebP quality of 85.

WebP files are clearly marked with a WEBP label in the Media Library.

JPG, PNG and WebP files are identified with visible format labels in the Media Library.

By default, the original JPG/JPEG file is removed after a successful conversion.

If the option to preserve the original file is enabled, the JPG/JPEG file is kept as a separate attachment in the Media Library.

The preserved JPG/JPEG may be a WordPress-processed image and may not have the original dimensions or full resolution.

== Settings ==

The FREE version provides the following setting:

* Keep original JPG/JPEG files – keeps the original JPG/JPEG file as a separate Media Library attachment.

WebP quality is fixed at 85 in the FREE version.
