First Things First

Welcome. MailPress is a very special project to me and I'm proud to be a part of it ;-). Lot of hours have gone into MailPress, and I am dedicated to making it better every day. Thank you for making it part of your world.

System requirements

• PHP version 5.2 or higher.
• MySQL version 5.0 or higher.
• WordPress version 2.9 or higher.

MailPress 5.0 is using swiftmailer 4.0.6.

Installation

1. Make sure you have already installed WordPress 2.9 or above.
2. Unzip the MailPress package.
3. Upload the mailpress folder into wp-content/plugins.
4. Make sure the wp-content/plugins/mailpress/tmp folder is writable.
5. Log in to your WordPress admin and point your browser to "Plugins > installed" page.
6. Activate MailPress plugin first.
7. Point your browser to "Settings > MailPress", fill and save the settings for each tab (General, SMTP, Test).
8. Activate MailPress add-ons (Plugins > MailPress Add-ons) if required and update the settings if necessary.
9. Once everything is installed, use the Test tab in "Settings > MailPress" to validate your settings.

Upgrading

Never use WordPress automatic upgrade : you will loose the content of mailpress/mp-content and mailpress/tmp folders !

1. Point your browser to "Plugins > installed" page and deactivate all add-ons and MailPress.
2. Save mailpress/tmp folder + your MP theme and/or form templates if customized.
3. Delete wp-content/plugins/mailpress folder.
4. Unzip the MailPress package.
5. Upload the mailpress folder into wp-content/plugins.
6. Make sure the wp-content/plugins/mailpress/tmp folder is writable.
7. Restore mailpress/tmp folder + your MP theme/form templates if any.
8. If you implemented page or category template, upgrade from mailpress/mp-content/xtras folder.
9. Refresh "Plugins > installed" page and activate MailPress plugin first.
10. Activate MailPress previous add-ons (Plugins > MailPress Add-ons) + new ones such as Newsletter or Comment if previously used.

MailPress themes and templates do not need to be changed if customized in a previous MailPress release.

Upgrading from another system

MailPress can import the emails stored in another system.
First you need to get MailPress installed and working as described above.
To finally import your emails into MailPress, you will need to use the Import add-on.

Some Add-ons

• Comment

  MailPress' subscribe to comments : Comment.

• Newsletters

  Allow subscription to newsletters. Newsletters are initialized with mailpress/mp-content/advanced/newsletters allowing you to fully customize each newsletter (theme, template, schedule ...) : Newsletter.

• Mailing lists

  Need to organize the emails inserted into MailPress and/or let your users to choose which mailing lists they subscribe to, based on WordPress taxonomy concept (post categories, link categories, tags) : Mailinglist.

• Batch mode

  Your website becomes more and more successfull, you have now plenty of subscribers, processing a large number of recipients becomes an issue ! , use the Batch_send add-on.

• Bounce handling

  Process your mail bounces with Bounce_handing add-on.

• Tracking

  Track your mails will report opening rate, clicks generated as well as geolocations of your readers using the MailPress Ip api. Activate Tracking add-on.

• Synchronize with WordPress

  You want to synchronize MailPress with your WordPress registered users, Sync_wordpress_user add on is made for you.

• User Roles

  If you need to set Capabilities in MailPress, use the Roles_and_capabilities add-on.

• SMTP, Sendmail, PHP mail()

  Natively, MailPress support SMTP connections to your mail server, however you can switch to Sendmail Connection_sendmail or native php mail() Connection_phpmail.

Final notes

• If you have any suggestions, ideas, comments, or if you (gasp!) found a bug, join the MailPress community in the MailPress google group.
• WordPress now has a robust plugin API that makes extending MailPress code easy. If you are a developer interested in utilizing this see the plugin documentation in the Codex. In most all cases you shouldn't modify any of the core code.
