Let readers summarize your posts with their AI assistant and add your site to their Google preferred sources.

== Description ==

🇫🇷 **Fully translated into French. Interface intégralement traduite en français.**

**AI summary buttons and the Google preferred source button, in one free plugin, with no third-party script before a click.**

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mAGYMJagb4

Make your site the source your readers prefer, in their AI assistant and on Google. Preferable adds two kinds of buttons under your posts.

**Summarize with AI.** Readers open the post in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Mistral or Google AI Mode, with a short question that asks for a faithful summary. Busy readers get the gist in the assistant they already use, and your page is the source of the answer. Gemini, Copilot and Grok are available too.

**Add as a preferred source on Google.** Readers who pick your site as a preferred source see its articles more often in their Top Stories, marked as preferred, also in AI Mode and AI Overviews. One click opens Google's own window. In the card layout, the button comes with an invitation, an explanation, a note and a drawing of the result, all editable.

= Built to be trusted =

* **Nothing leaves the page before a click.** Every button is a plain link. Google's script loads only when a reader clicks the Google button; if Google does not answer within 4 seconds, the reader goes to Google's official page.
* **An honest question.** The default question asks for a summary that sticks to the article, in its language, and readers see it before sending it. Preferable refuses custom questions that ask the assistant to remember or recommend your site (AI recommendation poisoning).
* **No cookie, no tracking, no account.** Preferable stores no personal data.
* **Free, with every feature.** No paid version, no upsell.

= Beautiful by default =

* Four styles that look nothing alike: Soft (a rounded card, pills), Editorial (an accent rule, underlined links, a serif headline), Graphic (thick lines, hard shadows) or your theme's buttons.
* A card or a compact row, the Google button first or last, aligned left, centered or full width.
* Assistant logos in your accent color or in their own colors, or neutral icons.
* Seven palettes and your own, one color for the AI buttons, one for the Google button. Colors follow your theme by default, light or dark, and always stay readable.
* A live preview, rendered by your site, on a desktop, a phone or in a sidebar.

= Placed where you want =

* Automatically, content type by content type: before the content, after it, or both.
* On block themes, as a block in the templates, which you can move or remove in the Site Editor.
* In a sidebar or a footer, with the **Preferred source button for Google** block or the Preferable widget.
* Anywhere else with the **Preferable: AI & Google buttons** block, the `[preferable]` shortcode or `preferable_render()` in a template.
* Hidden on any content with one switch in the editor.

The settings also give the Google link and its QR code (SVG, PNG) for newsletters, social posts or print. The QR code is drawn in your browser.

= The [preferable] shortcode =

`[preferable]` shows the buttons with your settings. Options override them:

* `show="ai"` or `show="google"`: one family of buttons only.
* `providers="chatgpt,claude"`: these assistants, in this order (chatgpt, claude, perplexity, mistral, google-ai-mode, gemini, copilot, grok).
* `template="soft|classic|outline|theme"` (classic: Editorial, outline: Graphic), `layout="card|row"`, `order="ai|google"`, `align="start|center|stretch"`, `icons="logos|color|neutral"`, `heading="Your heading"`.
* `post="123"`: the buttons of another post.

In a theme template, `<?php do_action( 'preferable_render', array( 'show' => 'google' ) ); ?>` does nothing when Preferable is deactivated.

= For developers =

* Filters: `preferable_providers`, `preferable_should_display`, `preferable_html`, `preferable_icon_svg`, `preferable_heading_level`, `preferable_ogeeat_buttons`, `preferable_palette`, `preferable_palette_variable`, `preferable_guard_words`.
* The output of `preferable_html` and `preferable_icon_svg` goes through `wp_kses()`: tags outside the plugin's list, such as scripts, are removed. Icons may use the basic SVG shapes.
* CSS variables: `--preferable-accent`, `--preferable-text`, `--preferable-bg`, `--preferable-ai`, `--preferable-google`, `--preferable-radius`, `--preferable-gap`.

= Translations =

Preferable ships with a complete French translation: settings, editor, block, widget and buttons. Translations into other languages are welcome on [translate.wordpress.org](https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/wp-plugins/preferable/).

= Credits =

Made by Fabrice Ducarme of [WPFormation](https://wpformation.com/). An optional credit link under the buttons is off unless you turn it on.

Bundled resources, licenses in `assets/licenses/` and `assets/fonts/`: assistant and Google icons from Simple Icons (CC0 1.0) and LobeHub Icons (MIT), the [uqr](https://github.com/unjs/uqr) QR code library (MIT), the Inter and JetBrains Mono fonts (SIL Open Font License 1.1).

Preferable is not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral AI, Google, Microsoft or SpaceXAI (formerly xAI). Their names and logos belong to them and only identify each service.

== Installation ==

1. Install and activate Preferable from Plugins > Add New.
2. The buttons appear under your posts at once.
3. Adjust assistants, Google button and appearance in Settings > Preferable.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= Does Preferable send anything to the AI services or to Google? =

Not while the page loads. A service is contacted only when a reader clicks its button, by the reader's browser.

= Why do Gemini and Copilot copy the question? =

They cannot receive a question in a link. Preferable copies it to the clipboard as the assistant opens, and tells the reader to paste it.

= Is my site eligible as a Google preferred source? =

Domains and subdomains are, sites in a subdirectory are not: the settings tell you. For AI Mode and AI Overviews, your site must stay included in Search generative AI features, in Search Console.

= The Google window reloads my article instead of closing =

Your server probably sends a `Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy: same-origin` header. Use `same-origin-allow-popups` instead, or remove the header.

= I also use OGEEAT: why do my visitors see no Preferable buttons? =

OGEEAT, a free plugin by the same author, can show its own AI and Google buttons. While they are on, Preferable shows nothing to your visitors, to avoid two sets of buttons. Turn them off in OGEEAT > Settings > AI, GEO & Firewall.

= Does it work with page builders and SEO plugins? =

Tested with Elementor, Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress and The SEO Framework: their descriptions and social tags never contain the buttons' text.

= Where is the source code of the JavaScript files? =

In the plugin: `build/` is compiled from `src/` with `@wordpress/scripts`. Run `npm install`, then `npm run build`, in the plugin folder to rebuild it.

= Can I put the Google button in my sidebar or footer? =

Yes, with the "Preferred source button for Google" block in Appearance > Widgets or in a template part, or with the classic Preferable widget. Outside single posts, it shows the Google button for your whole site.

== Screenshots ==

1. The buttons under a post: AI summary links, then the invitation to add the site as a preferred source on Google. Shown here with neutral icons; the assistants' logos are the default.
2. The Graphic style with a custom palette, the Google button first.
3. The Editorial style in a compact row.
4. The card on a phone.
5. Settings: the AI buttons, next to a live preview rendered by your site.
6. Settings: the Google button, with a check that Google accepts your domain.
7. Settings: four styles to pick from; layout, order, alignment, icons and colors follow.
8. The Preferable block in the editor.

== External services ==

Preferable links to the services below. None of them is contacted while a page loads: each one is reached only when a visitor clicks its button, by the visitor's browser. The site owner needs no account with any of them; a visitor uses their own account where the service asks for one.

= AI assistants =

When a visitor clicks an assistant button, the browser opens that assistant with a question. The question contains the title and the address of the article (and, if the site owner enabled it, utm parameters naming the assistant). For Gemini and Copilot, the question is copied to the visitor's clipboard instead and the assistant opens without it.

= Google preferred sources =

When a visitor clicks the Google button, the browser loads Google's script `https://news.google.com/swg/js/v1/publisher.js`, which opens Google's window to add the site to the visitor's preferred sources. The script receives the address of the page, like any script a browser loads. If the script does not answer within 4 seconds, or if JavaScript is off, the browser opens `https://www.google.com/preferences/source` with the site's domain.
