External Services
The External Services feature allows routes to be linked to multiple external platforms such as Strava, Garmin Connect, Ride with GPS, Komoot, and more. This replaces the previous single "Strava URL" field with a flexible multi-service system.
Overview
Key features of the external services system:
- Multiple Service Support - Link routes to unlimited external platforms
- Automatic Platform Detection - System automatically detects platform from URLs
- Icon Support - Each platform displays with appropriate icons in platform-specific colours
- Flexible Input Format - Supports multiple input formats for ease of use
- Migration Support - Automatic migration from old Strava URL field
Supported Platforms
The following platforms are automatically detected from URLs:
| Platform | URL Pattern | Icon |
|---|---|---|
| Strava | strava.com | Strava logo (orange) |
| Ride with GPS | ridewithgps.com | Route icon (green) |
| Komoot | komoot.com | Map marker (lime green) |
| Garmin Connect | garmin.com | Heartbeat icon (blue) |
| MapMyRide | mapmyride.com | External link icon |
| Wahoo | wahoo.com | External link icon |
| TrainingPeaks | trainingpeaks.com | External link icon |
| Wikiloc | wikiloc.com | External link icon |
| PlotARoute | plotaroute.com | External link icon |
| AllTrails | alltrails.com | External link icon |
Any URL that doesn't match a known platform will be displayed as "External Link" with a generic external link icon.
Adding External Links to Routes
Input Format
The External Services field accepts URLs in several formats:
Format 1: One URL Per Line (Recommended)
Simply enter each URL on its own line:

Format 2: Comma or Semicolon Separated
Multiple URLs can be on one line, separated by commas or semicolons:

How Links Are Displayed
On Route Pages
External services appear in the route information table with:
- Platform-specific coloured icon
- Platform name as clickable link
- Opens in a new tab with security attributes
- Multiple services display inline with wrapping
Icon Colours
- Strava: Orange (#fc4c02)
- Garmin Connect: Blue (#007cc3)
- Ride with GPS: Green (#00a651)
- Komoot: Lime green (#6aa127)
Send to RideWithGPS
A separate, one-click feature from the manual External Services links above: a "Send to RideWithGPS" button on a route's page lets a visitor push that route's GPX directly into their own RideWithGPS account, without downloading and re-uploading it themselves.
How it works
- The first time a visitor clicks the button, they're sent to RideWithGPS's own site to approve the connection - nothing is shared before they explicitly do this.
- Once approved, the connection is remembered in that visitor's own browser (an encrypted cookie), not on this site's server - so every send after the first is a genuine single click, and there's nothing about their RideWithGPS account for this site to store or protect.
- Only the route's GPX file and title are ever sent, and only to the visitor's own already-connected account.
Setup
- Register a free OAuth application at RideWithGPS's API clients page.
- On this plugin's Setup page, under Third-Party Services, paste in the Client ID and Client Secret RideWithGPS gives you.
- That same section shows the exact Redirect URI to paste back into RideWithGPS's application settings - it must match exactly.
- Turn the feature on for visitors from the Config page's Main Page tab ("Send to RideWithGPS").
Migration from Strava URL
If you previously used the old single "Strava URL" field, your data will be automatically migrated:
Automatic Migration
When a route is viewed or edited:
- The system checks if
external_ride_linksis empty - If empty, it looks for an old
strava_urlvalue - If found, the URL is copied to the new field
- The old field is then cleared
Google Sheets Import
When importing routes from Google Sheets:
- If your sheet has an
external_ride_linkscolumn, it will be used directly - If only a
strava_urlcolumn exists, the URL will be migrated automatically
