Makes the core Table block easier to edit: move between cells with Tab and Enter, and add, move, or delete rows and columns from handles.

== Description ==

TableSteward makes the core Table block easier to edit. It does not add a new block: your tables stay core Table blocks, and the saved HTML is exactly what WordPress itself saves. If you deactivate the plugin, your posts keep working.

* Press Tab and Shift+Tab to move between cells. Press Tab in the last cell to add a row, unless the table has a footer.
* Press Enter to move to the cell below. Press Enter in the last row to add a row, unless the table has a footer. Shift+Enter still inserts a line break.
* Hover a row or column to show its handle. Click the handle to insert, move, align, or delete.
* Drag a handle to reorder rows and columns. The other rows and columns move aside as you drag, so you can see the new order before you drop.
* Hover a line between rows or columns, or the bottom or right edge of a table, and click the round + button to insert a row or column there.

Nothing is loaded on the front end.

== Installation ==

1. Upload the plugin files to the `/wp-content/plugins/table-steward` directory, or install the plugin through the WordPress plugins screen directly.
2. Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' screen in WordPress.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= Does it work with tables that have merged cells? =

Tab and Shift+Tab move between cells, but Tab in the last cell does not add a row. The handles, the add buttons, and Enter navigation are turned off for tables with merged cells (colspan or rowspan) so that columns are never misaligned.

= How do I leave a table with the keyboard? =

Inside a table, Tab moves to the next cell, so it does not leave the table. Press an arrow key at the edge of the table (for example, Down in the last row) to move out of it.

= Why don't the handles and add buttons appear? =

They are turned off on touch devices, and for tables whose structure is locked, such as a table inside a group with locked content, or a table inside a synced pattern on a post. In right-to-left languages, only the column handles and the add column buttons are turned off; the row handles and the add row buttons still work. Tables with merged cells are covered above. In those cases, use the core "Edit table" toolbar button to insert and delete rows and columns. In a table with locked content, Tab and Enter still move between cells, but they never add a row.

= What happens if I deactivate the plugin? =

Nothing changes in your content. The plugin only adds editing tools; it never changes how tables are saved.

== Screenshots ==

1. Hover a row to show its handle. Click the handle to insert, move, or delete the row.
2. Hover the line between two rows to show the add button. Click anywhere on the line to insert a row there.
3. Drag a handle to reorder. The other rows move aside as you drag, so you can see the new order before you drop.
4. Column handles work the same way, and can also align the whole column.
