Evermag is a clean, minimal & modern WordPress magazine & newspaper theme for news websites, online magazines, news portals, local news, independent publishers, editorial teams, newsletters and blogs.

== Description ==

Evermag is a clean, minimal & modern WordPress magazine & newspaper theme for news websites, news magazines, online and digital magazines, news portals, local news, school and community newspapers, independent publishers, editorial teams, journalism projects, newsletters, writers and blogs. Lightweight and fast, built for readability: headlines, breaking news, columns and long reads look sharp on every screen. Free starter demos import in a few clicks: local news, tech, sports, business, entertainment, food, fashion, travel, music, politics and more. What makes it different? (1) Fast & lightweight: no page builder, no jQuery, one small vanilla JavaScript file. (2) Self-hosted fonts only, via the WordPress Font Library; no Google Fonts. (3) Editorial layouts: list or grid (2–4 columns), left/right sidebar or full width, with a per-post override. (4) Modern native Gutenberg editor, with editor styles that match the front end. (5) Flexible options in the native WP Customizer: fonts, colors, a header Subscribe button, light or dark footer, and instant search autocomplete. (6) Styled for the free Owldraft Newsletter and Editorial Blocks plugins. Live preview: https://evermag.owldraft.com

Features:

* Magazine, newspaper, news portal and blog layouts: list or grid (2, 3 or 4 columns).
* One column, or a left/right sidebar, with a per-post and per-page override.
* Fast & lightweight: no page builder, no jQuery. One small vanilla JavaScript file powers the off-canvas menu, header search and search autocomplete.
* Self-hosted fonts via the WordPress Font Library (WordPress 7.0+); no Google Fonts, system-font fallback on older versions.
* Instant, titles-only search autocomplete that stays fast on large news sites.
* Header Subscribe button for your newsletter, with its own text, link and style.
* Styled for the free Owldraft Newsletter plugin's subscribe form and the Owldraft Editorial Blocks, so a block-built homepage matches the rest of the site.
* Free starter demos for local news, tech, sports, business, entertainment, food, fashion, travel, music, politics and more, imported with the free Owldraft Starter Sites plugin from WordPress.org.
* Custom colors, heading weight and letter case, text or image logo.
* Light or dark footer, three footer widget areas.
* Three menu locations: primary, social and footer.
* Modern native Gutenberg editor, with editor styles that match the front end.
* Featured images, with wide and full-width media support.
* Responsive, translation-ready, WordPress 7.0 and PHP 8 ready.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= Does this theme use Google Fonts? =

No. Evermag serves self-hosted fonts only, through the WordPress Font Library (WordPress 7.0+). On older versions it falls back to the native system font stack.

= Does this theme load any JavaScript? =

One small file. Evermag loads a single vanilla JavaScript file (js/main.js, no jQuery or dependencies) that powers the off-canvas menu's keyboard accessibility, the header search reveal, and a titles-only search autocomplete. Each feature only runs where its markup exists, and everything degrades gracefully with JavaScript off.

= How do I remove the theme credit in the footer? =

Customize -> Footer -> turn off "Keep theme credit". GPL does not require keeping it.

= Where is the changelog? =

https://owldraft.com/docs/evermag/changelog/, and below in this file.

== Changelog ==

= 1.1.1 =
* Released: October 13, 2026
* Change: The newsletter plugin LetterWP is now Owldraft Newsletter, on WordPress.org. The subscribe form styling follows its new class names (owldraft-newsletter-*), and Appearance -> Evermag links wordpress.org/plugins/owldraft-newsletter.
* Fix: The author box keeps the avatar round when an image optimizer wraps it in a picture element.
* Change: A new theme description that names the free starter demos. New tags: block-styles, sticky-post.
* Change: The readme FAQ points to the online changelog at owldraft.com.

= 1.1 =
* Released: October 12, 2026
* New: Live preview in the Customizer. Colors, fonts, sizes, corners, the thumbnail ratio and width, the logo sizes and the footer skin repaint as you change them, and the site title, tagline and copyright line update in place instead of reloading the whole preview.
* New: Typography is grouped into one block per kind of text: Body font, Heading font, Heading sizes, Site title, Navigation, Post titles in lists, Single post title and Post meta. Each sets the font plus size, weight, letter spacing, line height and letter case where they apply; sizes take separate desktop, tablet and phone values. Fonts picked before carry over.
* New: Layout, Display and Footer skin are picked from little pictures; Grid columns and the two logo sizes are sliders; long sections are split under headings.
* New: Style > Heading color, Button border radius and Image border radius. Thumbnail ratio gains 1:1 square.
* New: Owldraft Editorial Blocks (Post Grid, Post List, Post Group, Hero, Authors) take the theme's fonts, colors and corners, so a block-built homepage matches the archive and single posts. The LetterWP subscribe form takes the heading font.
* New: A welcome notice offers to set the site up like the demo. One click installs and activates Owldraft Starter Sites from WordPress.org and opens it to pick a demo; nothing is installed until the button is clicked. Once the demo is imported, the plugin can be deleted.

= 1.0.1 =
* Released: October 10, 2026
* Change: New screenshot of the magazine demo homepage, with a wider 16:9 lead photo and five stories in the right column.

= 1.0.0 =
* Released: October 10, 2026
* First stable release, with everything from 0.9.1.1 to 0.9.2.3: the new theme page, the magazine demo screenshot and the new description.
* Change: Tested up to WordPress 7.1.
* Change: The translation template (languages/evermag.pot) is regenerated and covers every string.

= 0.9.2.3 =
* Released: October 10, 2026
* Change: A new theme description that says who Evermag is for (online and digital magazines, news portals, local news, school and community newspapers, independent publishers, editorial teams, newsletters) and what makes it different. The readme's documentation link points to owldraft.com/docs/evermag/.

= 0.9.2.2 =
* Released: October 10, 2026
* Change: New screenshot of the magazine demo homepage, with a newspaper photo as the lead story.

= 0.9.2.1 =
* Released: October 10, 2026
* Change: "Set up like the demo" on Appearance -> Evermag and in the welcome notice now opens the Install and set up guide, which took over the old setup page.

= 0.9.2 =
* Released: October 10, 2026
* Change: New screenshot, the Evermag magazine demo homepage.

= 0.9.1.1 =
* Released: October 10, 2026
* Change: Appearance -> Evermag is now one page of links, as in Stoat: Get started (setup guide, Customize, Menus, Widgets, newsletter), Help (docs, changelog, support forum), more Owldraft themes and plugins, and the author. The docs, changelog and support tabs are gone; they live online, where they stay current.
* Change: The welcome notice shows on every admin screen except the Evermag page, until you close it, and links to the setup guide and the Evermag page.
* Change: A new mark for the page: the sketch owl with a newspaper.

= 0.9.1 =
* Released: October 1, 2026
* New: Appearance -> Evermag, a theme page right below Themes with four tabs: General, Docs (the whole manual, linked into the Customizer), Changelog and Support.
* New: A one-time welcome notice on the Dashboard and the Themes screen, pointing to that page. Dismissed for good with its X, or by visiting the page.
* Fix: The WordPress social icon is keyed "wp", which Theme Check no longer reads as a misspelling of WordPress.
* Change: New screenshot, and a theme description that names the live demo and LetterWP compatibility.

= 0.9 =
* Released: July 20, 2026
* Initial release.
