A clean, modern block theme for blogs and business, portfolio, or service sites, with warm editorial style and ready-made page layouts.

== Description ==

Marginal is a lightweight, accessibility-focused block theme that started as a blog and writing theme, and now also ships ready-made page layouts for business, portfolio, and service-based sites -- all built from one consistent design system, so nothing feels bolted on.

At its core, Marginal pairs a warm editorial color palette with a wide, comfortable reading column and fluid typography, so long-form writing stays easy to read on every screen size. Choose from three built-in color style variations -- the default warm palette, a cool neutral "Ink" variation, and a green "Meadow" variation -- without writing any CSS.

For blogs, choose between three homepage styles: a classic post list, a magazine-style grid, or a minimalist link list. For business, portfolio, and service sites, assign one of eleven ready-made page templates (Home, About, Services, Pricing, Contact, Case Studies, and more) directly from Page Attributes, then fill them in with your own text and images alongside the theme's 17 block patterns -- hero sections, service cards, pricing tables, team grids, testimonials, an FAQ accordion, and more.

Every pattern and template is built entirely from core WordPress blocks -- no page builder, no bundled plugin, and nothing proprietary to get locked into.

Built entirely as a Full Site Editing (block) theme using theme.json, block templates, and template parts -- no Customizer, no widget areas required.

== Installation ==

1. In your WordPress admin, go to Appearance > Themes > Add New.
2. Search for "Marginal", or upload the theme .zip file directly via Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme.
3. Click Activate.
4. Go to Appearance > Editor to customize colors, typography, and templates using the Site Editor.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= Does this theme support the Site Editor (Full Site Editing)? =

Yes. Marginal is a full block theme built entirely with theme.json, block templates, and template parts. All customization -- colors, typography, layout, and templates -- happens through the Site Editor at Appearance > Editor.

= How do I change the color scheme? =

Marginal includes built-in style variations. Go to Appearance > Editor > Styles and choose from the available options, or create your own custom palette using the Site Editor's color and typography controls.

= Does this theme include ready-made page layouts for business, portfolio, or service sites? =

Yes. Marginal ships 11 custom page templates across Business, Portfolio, and Service. To use one, create or edit a Page, open Page Attributes in the sidebar, and choose a template from the dropdown -- for example "Business Home," "Portfolio Grid," or "Pricing / Packages." Templates that include a content area also let you type your own text normally in the Page editor.

= How do I change my blog homepage layout style? =

Marginal includes three blog homepage styles: Classic List (the default), Magazine Grid, and Minimalist. To switch, go to Appearance > Editor > Templates, open "Front Page," and use the "Swap template" option if it's available in your WordPress version. If that option isn't available, open the style you want, copy all of its blocks, then paste them into your active Front Page template and save.

= Does this theme include page-building patterns? =

Yes -- 17 in total. Open the block inserter and look under the "Marginal" category, or search by name. Editorial patterns: Hero / Featured Post, Author Bio, Pull Quote / Testimonial, Call to Action, and Page Header. Business and service patterns: Business Hero, Service Hero, Portfolio Hero, Service Cards, Pricing Table, Team Grid, Testimonials Grid, Portfolio Grid, Stats Row, FAQ Accordion, Logo Cloud, and Contact Info.

= Does this theme support widgets? =

No. As a block theme, Marginal uses block-based template parts instead of traditional widget areas. Any content you'd place in a widget can instead be added directly to a template part (such as the footer) using the Site Editor.

= Where can I report a bug or request a feature? =

Please use this theme's support forum on WordPress.org.

== Changelog ==

= 1.0.0 =
* Added 11 new custom page templates across three niches: Business (Home, About, Services, Contact), Portfolio (Grid, Case Studies, About), and Service (Overview, Pricing / Packages -- plus the shared Contact template).
* Added 12 new block patterns to support the above: Business Hero, Service Hero, Portfolio Hero, Service Cards, Pricing Table, Team Grid, Testimonials Grid, Portfolio Grid, Stats Row, FAQ Accordion, Logo Cloud, and Contact Info.
* Added two new blog homepage styles, Magazine Grid and Minimalist, selectable via the Front Page template's Swap Template option.
* Added a dedicated front-page.html template with a featured Hero pattern above the post list.
* Added two color style variations, "Ink" and "Meadow."
* Added a skip-to-content link and a matching landing target on every template, for keyboard and screen reader users.
* Added a visually-hidden top-level heading on blog homepage templates, so every page has exactly one h1.
* Added a languages/marginal.pot translation template.
* Fixed: the Page Header pattern previously showed hardcoded "About Marginal" text; it now dynamically shows the actual page title, since it's reused across every niche.
* Fixed: reserved a 16:9 aspect ratio on featured images in the homepage, blog index, and archive templates to prevent layout shift while images load.
* Fixed: the homepage hero image was being lazy-loaded because the site logo was consuming WordPress's default eager-image allowance; raised the threshold so both render eagerly.
* Added a preload hint for the Lora heading webfont, shortening time to first paint of heading text.
* Bumped "Requires at least" to WordPress 6.5, required by the FAQ Accordion pattern's use of the native Details block.

= 0.1.1 =
* Removed placeholder Theme URI from style.css header.
* Made all user-facing text strings in block patterns translation-ready.

= 0.1.0 =
* Initial release.
