A block theme for an independent publication: a full-width cover story, a band of recent headlines, a story feed and a calm serif reading column.

== Description ==

Open Tabs is a white and green block theme for an independent publication, a local journal or a personal blog. The newest story leads the homepage with a full-width headline above a panoramic photograph, followed by a four-column band of recent headlines, a two-column story feed and a pale green note linking to About and Contact.

Inner pages:

* Journal: a narrow archive of every story, newest first, with small square photographs (page template "Journal: all stories by date").
* Article: section, headline, standfirst and byline, a wide lead photograph, a comfortable serif reading column, tags, comments and up to three more stories from the same section.
* About (editor photograph and biography) and Contact (letters and pitches) page templates and patterns.
* Category, tag, author and date archives, search results and a 404 page in the same narrow list style.
* Full width, Canvas (no header or footer) and "Homepage: classic list" page templates.

Everything is built from core blocks and can be changed in the Site Editor (Appearance > Editor): colors, fonts, spacing, templates, navigation and patterns. Two extra style variations are included: Clear (sans-serif throughout) and Literary. Appearance → Customize → Theme Options adds a few presentation choices that core blocks cannot store: story photo shape, layout density, which story details show in lists, reading width, article spacing, article image corners and an optional reading-progress line on articles.

The fonts are bundled and served from your own site. The theme makes no requests to other servers, adds no tracking, and imports or changes nothing when you activate it.

A setup guide is included in the theme folder as GETTING-STARTED.md.

An Astro edition of Open Tabs, for static sites built with Astro, is sold separately at https://peachfinthemes.com/. It is not required for this WordPress theme, which is complete on its own.

== Installation ==

1. In your admin, go to Appearance > Themes > Add New Theme, search for "Open Tabs", then Install and Activate.
2. Go to Settings > Reading and choose "Your latest posts" so the homepage shows the cover story layout.
3. Write stories with a featured image, an excerpt (shown as the standfirst) and one category (the section).
4. Optionally create pages named Journal, About and Contact and choose the matching page template. Links to them appear in the menu and footer once they are published.

== Frequently Asked Questions ==

= Where can I find documentation and help? =

A setup guide is included as GETTING-STARTED.md. More guides and the theme page are at https://peachfinthemes.com/docs/ and https://peachfinthemes.com/themes/open-tabs/. For support, please post in this theme's WordPress.org support forum.

= The homepage shows a single list of posts. How do I get the cover story layout? =

Go to Settings > Reading and choose "Your latest posts". If you edited the Blog Home template in the Site Editor, reset it (Appearance > Editor > Templates > Blog Home > Reset).

= How do I change how many stories each homepage section shows? =

Each section is a Query Loop block. Open Appearance > Editor > Templates > Blog Home and change the number of items. If you change a count, change the next section's offset to match so stories are not repeated.

= Where do the Journal, About and Contact links come from? =

They appear once a published page with the slug journal, about or contact (or a page using the matching template) exists. You can also edit the navigation directly in the Site Editor.

= Does the theme include a contact form? =

No. The Contact pattern uses ordinary email links. Use a form plugin if you need a form.

= Does the theme collect data or load remote files? =

No. It sets no cookies, adds no analytics and loads no files from other servers. Fonts are bundled.

= How do I remove or change the footer credit? =

Open Appearance > Editor > Patterns (or the Footer template part), select the credit line, and edit or delete it.

== Changelog ==

= 2.0.1 =
* 2.0.1: Theme options moved to the Customizer; removed the custom settings screen.

= 2.0.0 - 2026-09-24 =
* First WordPress.org directory edition, based on Open Tabs 1.3.6.
* Removed the demo content file and the four photographs used only by it; the theme no longer refers to a separate demo importer.
* Theme Setup moved to the edit_theme_options capability and no longer mentions a download or importer.
* Block style names prefixed with the theme slug (open-tabs-bordered, open-tabs-callout); content saved with the previous names keeps its look.
* Footer credit and all pattern text are translatable; block attributes in patterns use core's serialize_block_attributes().
* The "original 1.2 layout" homepage template and masthead pattern are renamed "Homepage: classic list" and "Open Tabs centred masthead". Layout unchanged.
* readme.txt rewritten in the WordPress.org format; screenshot.png replaces screenshot.jpg.

= 1.3.6 =
* Full-width blocks inside articles span the window again; related stories keep three columns at wide widths.
* Faster first paint: the lead photo loads first and story cards further down load as they scroll into view.
* Smaller Vollkorn font files (Latin subset); long words and addresses wrap instead of widening the page.

== Upgrade Notice ==

= 2.0.0 =
First WordPress.org release. The design is unchanged from 1.3.6.
